Stump Removal

Whether you have an existing stump that needs removing or the one from the tree we just removed, we have the right equipment and expertise to get it done.  After the stump is removed, a 5 inch deep hole is usually left in place. Reason being is that the roots of the stump need to be cut completely in order to stop growth.  You can plant grass seeds or flowers in that hole or simply cover it with sod.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding requires the right type of equipment and someone with experience to operate the machinery. This is not an easy DIY job. If you’re having a tree removed or have an existing stump, allow us to create a package that will include stump removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding is different from removal in that a the stump is cut flush with the ground, however the roots of the tree are not cut with this method.

Do I need a Permit to remove my tree?

If you reside in Kitchener or Waterloo you do not require a permit to remove a tree on your private property if it's less than 10cm in height, if the tree is diseased, dead, or causing a hazard,  and if the tree is 5m (16.4 feet) within an occupied building.  More information can be found on City of Kitchener website or just call us and ask. You can send us a few pictures of your situation and we'll be able to advise whether or not you need a permit.

If you are residing in Cambridge and the tree diameter is more than 20cm (8 inches) measured at 1.4m above ground level, then you do need a permit to remove that tree. If the tree is dead or imminently hazardous, you do not need a permit however you do need to submit an Arborist Report.   Whatever it is, our Arborist will work with you through the whole process, including filling out the application as well as the application submission. We've done this numerous times so you can just rely on the folks with the experience.

How To Know When A Tree is Sick?

You can get a good idea of how healthy or sick your tree is by closely examining various parts of the tree-like trunks, branches, foliage, and above-ground roots. The examination should be done periodically. It is as easy as identifying anything that seems out of the ordinary or different in your plant. The steps to examine your plant are below:
  • Start from the ground up; you should be looking for severed roots or signs of decay or fungi, such as mushrooms.
  • Move upwards from the root and look for peeling or loose bark, cracks, or deep slits in the tree.
  • Now examine the trunk for signs of decay. This could appear like small holes or cavities, soft or decaying wood.
  • Now glance through the leaves and keep an eye out for dead or dying branches, spotting, holes, or odd coloration of leaves. Any leaning limbs or branches.
Other signs to look out for and observe that may indicate that your tree is dying could be, but not limited to one of these:
  1. 1. Seeping Fluid - If you notice fluid coming from your tree or pooled around the base of it, it may be a sign that your tree is sick. This may leave a sour odor and dark streaks down the bark. This is known as alcoholic slime flux.
    2. Peeling Bark - If the bark of your tree is peeling, it is another sign that your tree is sick. The function of the bark in such a case is compromised, and the trees may not maintain the necessary nutrients and could die.
    3. Fungus At The Base Of The Tree - Fungus in trees can cause rotting disease. It stuns branch growth and spreads infection. Over time, this fungus accumulates and turns hard and black.
    4. Discoloration Of Leaves - Alongside the yellow or brown appearance of leaves, you may also notice excessive wilting in trees coupled with slowed tree growth. You can also observe powdery mildew in leaves that may spread and cover them.

The Biggest Mistakes Homeowners Make
When Trimming  Their Trees

Having trees in your house is a rewarding experience; lush green views and a beautiful shade in summers is an experience that everyone should have in their day to day life. While all of this is true and breathtaking, this beautiful experience comes at the cost of taking care of your trees. Trimming trees is an essential part of tree growth. Therefore one has to do it right to reap the benefits. So, let’s make it easy and spell out the biggest mistake that you can make in trimming trees as a homeowner.

Invest in The Right Equipment for the Task
It’s a deadly combination when you don’t have the right tools and just the will to chop. This is the kind of motivation that will get you nowhere. To make it easier to understand, think about a hairdresser cutting your hair with poor, shoddy scissors.
Invest in the right tools if you want to take matters into your own hands. Some people say that not knowing when to stop trimming is the worst mistake that one can make while trimming, but that's far from the truth.

Trees grow back quickly and heal easily from that type of damage. What is more harmful is not giving the love a fully grown tree deserves. If you have the right tools, learning to trim trees can be a fun process. Even a bad trim will look neat.
If you are a homeowner, invest in the right tools so you can enjoy your home-grown trees to the fullest.

How To Know When It's Time To Take a Tree Down?

As a homeowner, you grow accustomed to certain trees and their presence, and cutting down trees is not an easy decision. However, in order to ensure the health of surrounding trees and your safety in the vicinity, it is important to know when to take a tree down.
  1. The dead-looking trees due to drought, pests, and invasive species can cause issues that can be defeated with a proper response, but in some cases, you cannot salvage them, and you must let go.
  2. The damage caused to trees due to harsh winters, lightning, or high winds can lead to non-recovery, which means that the time has come for tree removal.
  3. Fungus at the roots of your tree may create major issues like holes and dips that will appear on your lawn, disturbing the nature of the soil, affecting other trees if not dealt with timely.
  4. Rotting tree roots may not be visible and are, thus, immensely dangerous. Root rot can cause the tree to become unstable, which may lead to the falling of the tree at any instance.
  5. When a tree starts to shed big branches and large dead parts, it is dealing with some abnormality. Sometimes, your tree can be saved; other times, this can be very dangerous and can cause property damage to your vehicles and your home.
Watching out for trees that may need to be taken down is important for the health and safety of everyone in your house as well as the neighbourhood. It also relieves the land of something that can no longer be saved so that it may eventually be a site for growth again.

Why Do You Need To Trim Your Trees At
The Right Time Of The Year?

Many experts now agree that depending on the tree type, the right time for pruning and trimming may vary, but generally speaking, most tree types are to be maintained during the winter months. Beginning from November all the way to March are considered the best months to trim and prune your trees.
Other factors that impact the time at which a tree is to be trimmed include the likelihood of infestation or disease and how the surrounding environment is affected by its presence. There are many reasons why the colder months are generally preferred for trimming trees.
  1. In the winter months, trees become less likely to catch diseases or become infested, as most insects are in a dormant phase called diapause during these months.
  2. If timely taken care of, the tree will heal and grow faster as spring rolls around, which means that your lawn or garden will be full of colour and the joys that it brings.
  3. With the right service provider, you can get the tree removed during the winter months in a safe and responsible manner, without disturbing the surrounding environment too much.
  4. To achieve the best health for trees, it is thus important to ensure that they are trimmed or pruned at the right time.

One important consideration here is to know that certain tree types grow differently than others, and therefore might take longer or shorter to reach their ideal stage for growth. For example, trees growing in the sub-tropic and deciduous trees have different ideal times for trimming and pruning.
